The 2011 Toronto Symphony Orchestra National Piano Competition took place May 27 - 29 at The Royal Conservatory in Toronto.
ENTRY RULES
- Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants between the ages of 16 and 25 as of May 27, 2011. Proof of age and Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status required.
- Excellence in performance is required at or above the ARCT level.
- Applicants must be willing to be contacted by the competition publicist.
- Entry fees are non-refundable except in the case of illness or accident. Medical certificate required.
- Previous first-prize winners of the TSO National Piano Competition are not eligible to compete.
- Competitors must make arrangements for their accompanists and are responsible for their costs. Local accompanists will be available upon request.
- Competitors are responsible for their travel costs and must arrange their own accommodation. A list of local hotels and university residences will be provided.
- The audition piece must be solo piano and recorded on CD. Video cassettes and video DVDs are not acceptable.
- Competitors must provide on a second CD, separate from the audition CD, the following material for use in the program:
- a bio in Word format
- a recent head & shoulders photo in JPEG format
- a brief outline of past piano accomplishments (studies, teachers, diplomas, and awards) in Word format
- Decisions of the jury are final.
- Submissions must be complete and legible.
- Submissions must include a $150 registration fee (non-refundable certified cheque or money order payable to TSVC).
- Applicants will be notified of the status of their entry by the end of March 2011. Successful applicants will be notified two weeks before the competition as to date and time of performance.
REPERTOIRE REGULATIONS
- The audition piece must be a complete sonata, suite, or substantial one-movement work (e.g. Chopin Ballade or Scherzo) for solo piano.
- A list of solo and concerto repertoire with composers and durations must be submitted.
- Successful applicants must prepare a 40-minute piano recital, which may include the work submitted as the audition requirement.
- The recital program must present a complete sonata, one or more contrasting works, and a Canadian work.
- All selections must be performed from memory.
- Finalists shall play a complete concerto with second piano accompaniment.
- Approved concertos: Barber; Bartok No.3; Gershwin F major or Rhapsody in Blue; Grieg A minor; Khachaturian; Liszt No. 1 or 2; Ravel G major; Schumann A minor; Tchaikovsky No. 1 or 2; any concerto by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev (except No. 4), Rachmaninoff (including Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini), and Saint Saëns.
